Greetings in the name of our wonderful Lord Jesus. It is the time of the year in all Southern Baptist Churches that we hear the name Lottie Moon and the term “Lottie Moon Christmas Offering”. Lottie Moon was a missionary to China in the late 1800’s. She labored for 40 years with the Chinese people and eventually gave her life in the quest to reach them with the gospel. You can read her biography here: https://www.imb.org/who-was-lottie-moon. Each year we urge people to give to this needed offering. Lottie Moon Christmas Offering is one of the major sources of ongoing funding for the nearly 4700 Southern Baptist Missionaries. Due to rising costs and a decrease in giving it has been estimated that as many as 500 missionaries will be cut in the near future.
We as Christians have been mandated by Jesus Christ to go into all the world with the gospel, this mandate is undeniable when we read the Bible. It is the job of every Christian to have a vision to reach the world with the gospel. Certainly not all of us can go abroad but we can all be involved. I am so thankful that I was raised in a Southern Baptist Church. I am proud to be a Southern Baptist, I believe we have the best strategy of fulfilling the Great Commission through Cooperative Giving.
I pray that we would all give heartfelt prayer to the task of giving to the offering this year. The thought of pulling missionaries off the field is a travesty when we consider the fact that of the 7.2 billion people in the world nearly 3 billion live in a place with little or no access to the gospel. There are 16300 unique people groups in the world and nearly 6500 are considered unreached! Now is the time for God’s people to step up not shrink back.
Lets all pray for our missionaries as they serve God in places that cannot even be named, families who sacrifice everyday in order to obey the Great Commission. And may we all be witnesses where we are at, living lives that reflect the grace of God that has been shed on us.
